Create an Image Cropping Application in Flash with ActionScript 3 – Active Premium

Download Source Files

It’s that time of the week again; today we have an awesome Active Premium tutorial exclusively available to Premium members. Follow the prolific Carlos Yanez as he explains how to build an image cropping app – all with Flash and AS3..

This Premium Tutorial is Filled with Creative Tips

Using the Flash Tools we’ll create an attractive interface that will be powered by several ActionScript 3 classes like MouseCursor, Bitmap, BitmapData, Rectangle, Point, Tween, FileReference and even external libraries. A nice looking mac-like interface will power our code, involving multiple timeline based buttons, custom cursors and more.

The user will be able to crop an image multiple times to later select the best option and save it to disk.

    A couple thoughts and suggestions…

    A) Click once outside of your selection to clear the selection, instead of having it just select a smaller 10px by 10px box.

    B) Dragging from top-left to bottom-right works once, but if you go too far, you can’t drag back top-left to shrink the current selection before letting go. You have to drag a whole new selection. (kinda frustrating).

    C) When viewing crops that you have made, the “clear” button should be “delete” and should only delete one of the crops that you’ve made, not all of them. Or at least have a “delete single crop” button.

Other than that, I think this outcome is pretty nice. I’ll comment again after logging into Premium and checking out the source.

    Hey,

This looks good I did a project last year on cropping images using jqury etc. This works well though.

Would it be possible to allow a user to upload their own image? And then crop that and output it?

Also could you fix the aspect ratio of the cropper?

    Cheers
    Chris
