This Premium Tutorial is Filled with Creative Tips
In this Premium tutorial we will build a online photobooth and a 3d photowall. This application will let you take a photo using your webcam after which it is sent to a server where it will be stored in a database. Finally, your photo will be viewable in a 3d photo carousel.
We’ll cover a wide range of techniques like flash remoting, AMFPHP, mySQL databases, PHP and the new Away3D lite engine.

The usability of this is horrible. This is the exact type of frivolous interaction that makes people hate flash. There was a very valid and interesting idea here, and it was killed with poor over designed interaction. I can’t view just one photo, they don’t stop spinning, and the tube of photos is difficult to control. The wait for the load is just a blank grey area, and the initial page to choose between the booth or viewer has no hint of necessity to clink those links, I sat on that page for a bit waiting for the flash to load. Why don’t the two exist side by side on a single page? The tutorial states that your photo will be viewable in a 3d carousel, that is debatable based on your interpretation of “viewable” I suppose. This is just kind of disappointing, I would expect a half planned tutorial for free, but when you request to be paid, it should be well thought out. Not just fun to look at.
Fair points, but the core of this tut (about 75%) takes you through the fundamentals of Flash remoting with AMFPHP, pretty useful stuff when you want to capture, store and retrieve image data. How you present the application to your end users is entirely up to you, though you’re dead right in saying that usability should be high on your list of priorities.
Thanks for your feedback, I suppose you’re right about the interaction, but in my defense, the focus of this tutorial is on setting up AMFPHP and storing/retrieving data in/from it. I’ve added the ’3d photo wall’ to give an example how to integrate the data retrieved into an ‘viewer’, certainly not to demonstrate my awesome interaction design skills :-)
Thanks for posting. It helps the ideas and tips you shared.
The preview of the Flash Gallery doesn’t seam to be working.
Cool tut!But as Dan said the carousel is horribly designed and is hard to control.
Any ways high fives!
For someone stepping right into php.. is this php4?
-Thanks
The preview is tooooooooooooooo small.
