Which Tuts+ Site Should We Launch Next?

We’re planning our next few Tuts+ sites, and would love your opinion and advice on which topics you think we should cover next! We’d be really grateful if you could take a minute to answer our quick poll and share your thoughts…

Have Your Say

We’ve been considering lots of different ideas for our next Tuts+ sites over the past few weeks, and wanted to also ask the opinion of our awesome community!

A selection of different concepts are included in the poll to the right, along with the option for you to submit your own ideas as well.

The important thing to note is that these are just ideas. Some of these are close to making our final cut, and others aren’t… We’d love to hear what you think, to help guide our decision.

Thanks for taking the time to offer your suggestion — I can’t wait to see what you have to say!

Win a 6-Month Tuts+ Premium Membership

Our poll will be running for the next couple of weeks, and we’ll be choosing one respondent at random to receive a six-month Tuts+ Premium membership!

To be entered into the giveaway, just leave a comment on this post to go into a bit more detail about your site suggestion. We’ll choose one comment at random to win the Tuts+ Premium membership when the poll ends.

Best of luck!

The gamedevtuts suggestion seems like the most solid and practical one with a large amount of content already on the site for that topic.

Activetuts has a clear split between the game dev stuff and everything else, and there seems to be more than enough content to warrant a spin-off specifically for gaming, with the more general programming and animation tutorials remaining as part of activetuts.

Productivitytuts… hmm.. for the majority of freelancers, I’m left with a niggling feeling that the entire content of that site should just take the form of a big neon flashing sign saying “close your web browser, and start working, slacker!”.

Feels like any of the genuine productivity articles would be better off incorporated into a Freelancetuts site.. same goes for businesstuts and financetuts. With those four, it might be worth combining them into a single site and then seeing if each sub-category attracts enough interest to warrant a site all on its own.

I can definitely see potential for at least one site covering the non-creative, but still essential side of things that we have to deal with like marketing and tax returns.

  • Qbrainz

How bout Electrotuts or hardwaretuts ?
something about arduino / rasberry pi article or DIY how to create electronic things.
I think sciencetuts will also be a good section

  • Ginnyous

    Sciencetuts.
Because science is a really big fun! I could write about DIY Arduino project, that measures outside temperature and send to my Facebook profile, what’s the weather like a what should I dress up.

  • Dieter

I’ve chosen for GameDevTuts+. The reason why I’ve chosen this is because first of all I’m studying applied computer science and secondly I just love to play around in the XNA framework.

But I just want to see some decent articles on how to understand the game loop etc…

  • emrah atilkan

    Arduino has potential.

I’d like to see a GameDevTuts+, the reason behind this is that there are allready some great articles dedicated to creating games in various languages, etc. However it would be great to have a website that offers lessons on in-depth subjects regarding game development, such as a game loop explanation, and who wouldn’t want to learn more about subject that you need to watch out for, and tips when creating your own game from the scratch.

It’s great that you are expanding your sources, and so far, i’ve had a real blast reading through various articles written here. Thanks for the possibilities, and keep up the good work ;)

    GameDesignTuts+
GameDevTuts+ sound a bit too technical and could focus on development only while GameDesignTuts+ can be more general and cover all things related to games, from concept to graphics, from development to marketing, reviews, post-mortems, etcetera.

  • kahshiu

Well, sciencetuts really sound promising. Maybe cos I a curious guy

  • http://www.thinkingimpairedstudios.com Kelsey Doherty

    GameDesignTuts+

It was a split between this and a combination of freelance/productivity/businesstuts, but I would much rather be served by a full featured gamedesigntuts. Like other’s have stated there is plenty of content already on this site to lay a foundation, and plenty more to dive into. Plus, I would really like to see more non-programming articles written and this would provide the space – design theory, etc. The recent flash game reviews on activetuts are great. Perhaps even a few sections on different video game art styles like “How to create pixel art”.

  • Paul

I have chosen Techtuts. It would be great for things like repairs to mobile phones, laptops, xbox’s any consumer electronics really. There is a huge worldwide market for these sort of repairs and its also a hobby for a lot of guys, especially iphone repairs. There are hundreds of video’s on this topic on you-tube it would be great to have a central pace for that kind of thing.

My Samsung flat screen telly stopped working a little while ago, but with a £4 capacitor and a video tut I fixed it within 20 mins. How cool is that!

  • Evan

Techtuts+ would be a nice addition to the Tuts+ network. It could cover things like building your own computer to DIY projects.

  • Jason

    Mathtuts+

I’d love to see a tuts site based around intermediate to advanced math and comp. sci. topics. I think it could be a fabulous and interesting resource.

  • Jesus

    I’d like Gamedevtuts+

  • http://laranzjoe.blogspot.com lawrence77

    i voted ‘others’

dotnettuts+ which cover every bit of the dotnet framework, sqlserver, ado.net, wcf, wpf, silverlight, etc.,
cmstuts+ which cover every cms from wordpress, drupal, joomla, dotnetblogengine, dotnetnuke etc., :D

where is Herbtuts+ in options :D

A tutsplus forum will be awesome too

  • http://www.gemfruit.com Porter

    GameDesignTuts+ definitely gets my vote.

As already mentioned, there’s a lot of other related content already, and design is not only crucial to the process of making a game, but in my opinion the most essential aspect. That point aside, I could write more articles on design than I can heavy programming, so I could personally contribute, which is cool to me.

I think animation tuts are something that is lacking online. I dont mean motion graphics. I mean toonboom and (did everybody forget flash can make cartoons when they said it was dead?) Flash and other cartoon animation software out there. Show us how to make smooth style family guy and simspsons style animation using flash and toonboom. Show us good lip syncing techniques. Im an animator in training. I do interactive just as much but id like to learn pure animation skill. Animatetuts+.

  • interester

I totally agree with Ernesto Quezada about a GameDesignTuts+, and optymystyc about a Animatetuts+

  • http://blog.iflashlord.com Behrouz

    Add Gamedevtuts+
    thanks a lot :D

  • Danish

i’d love mathtuts and healthtuts and gamedev tuts..pleasee consider these!!

    • http://michaeljameswilliams.com/ Michael James Williams

      We’re considering all of them!

  • Demone

GameDesignTuts+ gets my vote, but would also be great to see a AnimationTuts+ site. Their aren’t enough sites on animation, and not just for motion graphics.

  • Konstantin

    Other: Javadevtuts+
I think Java is one of the most perspective languages, but there are not many good java tutorial web sites on the Internet. Most of them either too complicated for beginners or too laconic. Knowing the quality of Tuts+ tutorials, I’m sure, java tuts+ would be great. And of course, I’d love to write Java tuts myself :)

    Hi all.
Productivitytuts+ should be a good idea if the final point is about how to deal with certain situations at a certain time in a project life.
    For example :
    - you are a freelancer in a middle of a job and you get a bad cold that you bedridden for three days : what to say to your customer (or boss)?
    - your customer or you boss is giving you again and again a “new” final template for the web site (you feel like you already did that project 3 or 4 times) : how to tell him he’s wrong to manage the project that way ?

Of course, most of the situations I’m talking about can be seen differently from a freelancer or from an employed, but I think they must be handled the same way.

    Regards.
    Carlos.

  • http://www.mobiadage.com/ Bill

GameDev wish from me… would be really awesome!

  • http://abeltoy.com/ Abel Toy

    GameDesignTuts+! :D

  • http://abeltoy.com/ Abel Toy

I voted for others: “GameDesignTuts+”. It’s basically the same reasons Ernesto Quezada gave. I think it’s better than GameDevTuts+. But, if GameDevTuts+ finally wins instead of GameDesignTuts+, I hope there are game design tutorials there as well! :P

One question, can we see how the poll is going, or that won’t be seen till the end?

    Thanks,
    Abel.

  • http://michaeljameswilliams.com/ Michael James Williams

Wow, Game development/design is certainly a popular choice!

Abel: I’m not sure when (or even whether) we’ll make the poll results public. But of course you’ll see an announcement when we launch the new site :)

  • Adrian

    My vote goes to GameDevTuts+

I already love the game-centric tutorials posted here, and a whole tuts+ site dedicated to learning game-development would be spectacular.

  • Tahsin

My vote goes to GameDevTuts+ becuase i like such tuto…….

  • http://www.cyrusdennis.com Cyrus Dennis

    VidTuts+
covering tutorials and source material on film making, lighting, directing, producing, colour grading, colour correction, software, equipment etc

  • Tim B.

I’m definitely jumping on the GameDesignTuts+ idea. I love the principals of good game design, and aside from scattered posts around the internet, there’s really nowhere that actually focuses on this stuff. I’m talking about hardcore philosophical stuff, too, like in the Art of Game Design book. My only fear is that it will be hard to find editors that keep it going well enough. After a while, the site will become overflowed with tutorials on “Step by Step Design of a Sleek U.I. Menu.” I’m not about that. I want something that feels underground, like a place that keeps game design feeling like the art that it is.

  • Edward Allen

GamedevTuts+ with all the tutorials you guys make id would instantly become a hit

  • http://www.deluxextreme.com Jason Webb

Programming Tuts+ . It’s also very important topic. Especially about trending and most used programming languages for cross platform. For software or game programming, it doesn’t matter. This is also topic of Most Visited Forums (codeproject.com, daniweb.com …) Good Luck :)

  • kryss

I think that both productivity and game dev are important.
The activetut+ tutorials are not enough for gamedevelopment and everybody needs to be productive

  • Ashwin

I would go for GameDevTuts+ as known already the quality of game tutorials is definitely way above the mark here and it would be great if there is a central hub for all the great game tutorials in one place, that way more contributors can share their knowledge and learners can gain tons from them.

As a side note i wouldn’t mind a MathTuts+ as the net is populated with technology related content it would be nice to have a section for the fundamental building blocks of science to have tutorials dedicated to them. It would be of immense value if there are Maths tuts covering all fields mainly computer science and also Game-Development, maybe i am asking for more i guess but whatever comes out of ActiveTuts+ is surely going to be great!!!

    • http://michaeljameswilliams.com/ Michael James Williams

      Thanks, Ashwin :)
